Where we come from
Active Bioscience was founded in 2006 by Dr. Bärbel Icheln after she gained
experience in production and sales of recombinant proteins in research grade
and under GMP at Strathmann Biotech GmbH. From 2006 until the end of 2019 she was also managing director of PeproTech GmbH. Now she is fully
focused on the further development of Active Bioscience across Europe. She
also works as a consultant and shares her experience as a mentor.

Cell culture tested premium grade – cct-premium
Production The cct-premium products are produced in E. Coli or insect cells. The identity is verified by N-terminal sequencing and mass spectrometry. SDS-PAGE and
Western Blot are also used. Our production is ISO 9001:2015 certified.
Quality controls The purity is determined with SDS-PAGE and RP-HPLC if necessary. Test vials from each batch are reconstituted in our QC laboratory after lyophilization and carefully checked for protein quantity
and activity. We generally store retention samples.

Recombinant human serum albumins offer the solution for chemically defined media. Regularly, the inexpensive recombinant HSA produced in plants is available in a purity of 96%, which is sufficient for many applications. For some of our in-house
applications, a higher purity was needed, so we developed recombinant HSA ultra pure with a purity of over 98% for the most batches even ≥ 99%. We use HSA ultra pure for the stabilization of our stock solutions and media production. …
Custom production
Active Bioscience offers custom production of recombinant proteins in E. Coli. This can start with gene cloning into an appropriate expression vector, followed by screening
and selection of the optimal clone for production. The initial fermentation starts in small volumes and if necessary can be upscaled to bulk fermentation. Protein purification is also possible in different scales and with a variety of techniques.
Usually we start with the adaptation of an existing in house process to speed up the development and to be as cost effective as possible for our customer.To ensure the safety of the process we use a defined medium for the production. …
Bioassay Service
To ensure the quality of our products we check the bioactivity of each production run of nearly every product in a suitable bioassay. There are only few products in our range where no
suitable Bioassay is available. For our cell culture tested premium Products (cct-premium) we determine the activity in direct comparison with the WHO-Standard. Reading is by direct cell counting or measurement of an enzymatic activity.
Our bioassays are also available as service to our customers, who either have produced their own protein or just wish to check a product from various sources. This service can start with an initial "low level low cost" approach,
basically just to check if there is any activity at all, up to a fully validated assay and comparison with international standards. …
