Description of Human/Murine/Rat Activin A

The active form of recombinant human Activin A is a 26.2 kDa disulfide-linked homodimer of two beta A chains, each containing 117 amino acid residues, belonging to the TGF-beta family. It exhibits a wide range of biological activities including regulation of cellular proliferation and differentiation and promotion of neuronal survival. Elevated levels of Activin A in human colorectal tumors and in postmenopausal women have been implicated in colorectal and breast cancers, respectively. The biological activities of Activin A can be neutralized by inhibins and by the diffusible TGF-beta antagonist, follistatin.

Biological Activity

The ED₅₀ of ≤ 1,5 ng/ml was determined by its ability to induce cytotoxicity of MPC-11 cell. It corresponds to a specific activity of ≥ 1 x 10⁵ units/mg.

Reconstitution

We recommend a quick spin followed by reconstitution in sterile water to a concentration of 100 µg/ml, which can then be further diluted to other aqueous solutions.

Stability

Lyophilized Activin A is stable at room temperature for up to 3 weeks, and until expiry date if stored below -18°C. Upon reconstitution Activin A can be stored at 4°C for 2-7 days and for future use below -18°C. For long term storage we recommend to add a carrier protein (0.1% HSA, order number: 2835.955.xyz or 2835.958.xyz, or BSA, order number: 2835.919.xyz). Please avoid repeated freeze-thaw cycles.
